A Boat For All Reasons

How and Why I Created the Yacht Report...

For whatever reason you want a sailboat, whether for racing, day sailing, or offshore cruising - the questions you ask yourself, before you buy (since it represents such a large investment) are, "Is the dealer knowledgeable enough to tell me what I need?" and "Will the sailboat do what I want it to do?"

The fact is, there are as many types of sailboats as there are "what I want it to do's" - which makes it very confusing for buyers to choose the right boat for their needs. Even an experienced yachtsman has doubts when he has to choose between the many permutations of rigs, types and shapes.

The first time I went to a boat show looking for my dream cruiser I was overwhelmed with the assortment of cruising boats available. There were Cutters with keel stepped masts and skeg hung rudders; Ketches with drop keels and deck stepped masts; Sloops with single spreaders; Yawls with double spreaders; and Schooners with rudders hung on keels! I was confused! And to top it off, all of the boat dealers were telling me why their boat was the right cruising boat for me! When I left the boat show I thought to myself, "Choosing my dream cruiser is going to be a little more difficult than I thought!" My ultimate choice would provide me with a sailboat in which to cruise around the world, one that would keep me safe and comfortable without compromising speed or seaworthiness.

I needed some help! Listening to my friends gave me more ideas than I have friends. I had lots of opinions and tons of information - what I needed was the specific knowledge required to make the decision that was right for me. To make the right decision I knew I needed to somehow refine all of the information into useful knowledge.

"Knowledge it is," I said, "So knowledge I'll get." And I signed up for a yacht design course at a local college. I had no desire to become a yacht designer, and though the course was quite technical, it was also very enlightening. It helped me to understand the theories and techniques that go into the design and construction of offshore cruisers (and racers or daysailers).

The yacht design class gave me what I needed to make the right choices. I took the following performance ratios and equation formulas:

and created (with the help of a computer genius) a computerized program for yacht performance evaluation and classification.

These performance ratios were developed over many years by yacht designers and naval architects in building yachts to specific needs. They are used in the design of all sailboats: racers, ocean cruisers, motorsailers, daysailers, production boats, etc. Without sounding like an advertisement (I just did) this yacht analysis is crucial to any boat buyer - before they buy. It's backed with precise calculations that have been used for hundreds of boat building years. When I see a sailboat that meets my aesthetic needs, I determine whether it meets my basic requirements which include: size, rig, displacement, construction, machinery, deck equipment, electronics and interior. When these requirements are satisfied, I enter the following information into the computer: model, year, manufacturer, LOA, LWL, beam, displacement, ballast, sail area, draft, rig, and engine size. The computer will then tell me if I have found what I am looking for (in my case an offshore cruiser) and - Eureka! The computer analysis gives me the knowledge and confidence needed to make the right decision - to make my dream come true!

Of course you can enroll in a yacht design course and devise your own computer program to calculate all the variables. You'll learn a lot along the way, and I encourage you to try. But if you want immediate information, I'm here to help right now.

This computerized yacht performance evaluation report is available to boat dreamers, boat buyers, boat owners, and boat dealers. It will allow you to thoroughly analyze any sailing yacht, and realize your dream!
