Hot Boating Tip

What to do with a clogged through-hull!

Have you noticed that marine creatures are always growing on the bottom of your boat, particularly just before the bottom needs painting. They like to grow in those hard to get to places like into your through-hulls and more damaging, your engines raw water intake. Well, no need to haul the boat or hire a diver to clean them. Here's what you can do.

Close the clogged intake seacock. Remove the intake hose. Temporarily attach a hose on the seacock tailpiece that is long enough to reach above the waterline and support that hose in a vertical position. Open the seacock and run a rod, wood dowel or a wire coat hanger down through the hose to clear the obstruction.

Here's a handy hint: Next time you haul out for bottom painting, use a small paint brush and paint as far as the paint brush will reach inside the through-hulls this will prevent things from growing.
